Recognition for Speech Contests

A year ago, while serving as the Area 13 Director, I was often reminded by our Division M Director, Amit Maheshwari, of the prime importance of spring speech contests. Planning months in advance to secure a venue (pre-pandemic), and lining up volunteers could not start too early. “This will be your number one challenge and achievement,” he would remind us. Amit’s words continue to resonate in this Speech Contest season.

Starting with our contest at my home club, Mall Talkers, I have had the privilege to attend a number of contests in February and March, often as a volunteer. It strikes me that my role is so easy compared to the enormous effort expended by the contestants themselves and the organizers. In March 2020, the logistics of a Zoom format contest seemed so daunting. However, now, the very concept of a break-out room is so routine. We have come a long way.

What has not changed is the preparation of each contestant. The content and flow of each International speech is well thought out, including the choreographed use of space and gestures. What each of us witness is the product of countless rehearsals and refinement. Even Table Topics seem to defy the serendipity of each question: the approach each contestant takes to their responses seem to reflect carefully planned strategies.

Perhaps what I love most about speech contests is the chance to hear the voice of individual Toastmasters. Speech narratives include intimate anecdotes, and real-life happenings to which we can all relate. We feel empathy, closer to the speaker than we felt before.

I will be working in the coming weeks on news releases to celebrate those reaching the District Contest on April 17th. Let me know if there is a particular individual in your club, or Area or Division whom you feel deserves a special callout or interview in Coffee with Chuck.

True to Amit’s words of wisdom, our speech contests are a singular achievement well worth talking up.
