We Like to be Noticed!

Each month I have the chance to speak with others serving as District Public Relations Managers across Region 4. I have found these meetings to be a great opportunity to exchange ideas and best practices. Most recently we had a spirited discussion on the value of recognition. More to the point, the importance of immediate recognition. Who is excited to be praised for a job well done or to see photos from a memorable event months later? Building dynamic clubs where members are motivated to hone their public speaking skills takes time and energy. We want to project that excitement to others as it happens.

…importance of immediate recognition.

This really resonated with me. At my home club, Mall Talkers, we recognize achievements in Pathways as soon as they are achieved. Some of our members who have acted as club ambassadors by presenting to other work teams are recognized back to their managers using employee e-thanks messages. Another area deserving of recognition is perhaps less obvious but equally important: the esprit de corps of clubs that members radiate. Put differently, what would an outside guest experience when visiting a club for the first time? The Moments of Truth impact. How do we recognize those aspects of a well-run club?

I was deeply moved by the spirited interaction of many of the clubs I visited during my Area Director tenure. I could feel it when entering the room for the first time, even if the club was meeting before work. Laughter and off the cuff creativity were the norm, driving some of the most awe-inspiring speeches I have ever witnessed.

Let that excitement come through!

Let’s make full use of our District 6 social media channels to showcase our clubs. What is going well this year and what challenges are being met? Showcase your open houses and speech contests and dynamic members. Photos and blurbs are welcome! Reach out to me with your ideas to post to the District 6 Group Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube sites. Let that excitement come through!
