Organizing my first Speechcraft program was a blend of excitement and some trepidation. As a Toastmaster, I knew how powerful this program could be in introducing people to the art of public speaking. What I did not anticipate was how transformative it would be—not just for the participants, but for our club.
The idea for a Speechcraft program arose during a club meeting when we discussed ways to boost membership. Our club had great camaraderie and seasoned members, but we struggled to attract newcomers. I volunteered to lead the initiative, believing it would not only help the club but also sharpen my leadership skills.
We first had to decide the length of the program – 4, 6, or 8 weeks. We chose a 6-week program because we felt it would give us just the right amount of time to demonstrate the skills for which Toastmasters is well known.
The preparation process was key to the program’s success. Since we meet in a large medical facility we first advertised in the “Daily Briefing,” seen by all employees in the center. Next, we posted our flyers on local community boards, social media, and by word of mouth. To make the program appealing, we highlighted Speechcraft as a safe and structured way to improve communication skills—perfect for professionals, students, and anyone wanting to grow.
Once our Speechcrafters signed up, the Speechcraft coordinator registered their names with Toastmasters International and it was “Game On!” After each Speechcrafter completed each presentation, the coordinator logged the speech on the Toastmasters International website for the participant to receive credit for that accomplishment.
When the first session began, the room buzzed with a mix of curiosity and apprehension. The participants ranged from a medical provider concerned with patient interactions to a seasoned business continuity professional looking to refine their presentation skills. I vividly remember one participant, Robert, who confessed he avoided speaking in front of even small groups.
Over the course of six weeks, I watched Robert and others transform. Guided by the structured Speechcraft materials and the support of club members who served as mentors, they gradually stepped out of their comfort zones. Each session built on the last, with participants delivering prepared speeches, practicing impromptu speaking, and receiving encouraging feedback.
By the end of the program, the change was remarkable. Robert, who had been reluctant to speak, delivered an inspiring final speech that earned him a standing ovation. The participants’ growth was not only rewarding for them but also inspiring for our club members.
The real victory came when three of the participants decided to join our club. Their enthusiasm infused new energy into our meetings, and their fresh perspectives sparked renewed creativity among existing members.
Leading the Speechcraft program taught me that success lies in creating a welcoming environment where people feel supported and challenged to grow. It was a proud moment not just for me, but for our entire Toastmasters family.
