The Member Matters
Dear Toastmasters,
A few years ago, when I was asked “What defines a club?” I had to think long and hard about what does this question mean? Is it the club quality? Is it how well the agendas are laid out? Is
it our club culture? And so many other thoughts went through my mind.
But finally, one word defined it all: Members. Yes, every member defines a club. No matter how
well our clubs are run or how good the quality of the club is, the bottom line is the “member” is
what makes a club.
While focusing on the PR campaign, we sometimes forget that retaining a member is far more important than getting new members. So, fellow toastmasters, pay special attention to the “foundation” of the club: The Member. Ensure that every member is feeling the same respect as you do as a fellow member of the club. There is a value to the membership. Hope that every member feels their contribution is valued the same way that you feel valued.

MEMBERS
There are few ideas I wish to share with you on how to get started with rebuilding the "member" component
- Do a survey to find out if each member is satisfied or if there is a need.
- Conduct 1-1's with every member. Reach out to every member.
- Facilitate discussions on changes that might help. Let the members weigh in rather than trying out something on your own.
- Employ team building exercises: host Zoom parties, toast the friendship, do fun games.
Let those ideas fly!
Show your
care ...
I bet many of you have far more exciting ideas than those I have listed here. Let those ideas fly!
You will be amazed how the membership flourishes when you show your care for every
member. That energy will bring in new members.
I hope you discuss the individual “member” at your next officer or club meeting.
Best wishes
Sincerely,
Ravi
