A New Year and The Future is Bright!

A New Year and The Future is Bright!

 Hello District 6,

It is hard to believe we are almost 2 months into a new Toastmaster’s Year! I believe it is going to be a great year and I am glad that you are a part of it!

As a District Leadership Team, we want to do everything can to uplevel the Member Experience so that the reason(s) why people joined Toastmasters can be realized in an even greater way. We want our members to truly feel cared for and supported in a greater way. What that looks like? We are on a journey of discovering that and doing it! If you have ideas or suggestions, please do not hesitate in reaching out to me, I genuinely want to hear from you!

On this journey, we are also looking carefully at what we have done over the last couple of years:

  • What went well? Can we operationalize those things and make them a part of the new normal?
  • What are those things that perhaps didn’t go as well as we had hoped?
  • Can we adjust them for better outcomes or do we need to ditch them all together?
  • Where did we drop the ball? While mistakes happen, what can we do to not drop those balls this year or in the future.

We are starting the year strong with great Division and Area Directors in place to serve the clubs in their respective Divisions and Areas. We want to go from strength to help the district step into its full potential.

Do you have an interest in using your talents and abilities to serve the members of District 6, please reach out to me and we will find a place for you to shine as you help take District 6 to the next level.

Are you passionate about your Toastmasters Journey and want to help make a meaningful difference in the lives of your fellow Toastmasters? Then, consider being an Area Director. It is a tremendously rewarding experience that will provide you with the district leader credit that you need for your Pathways DTM.

 We need 7 Area Directors:

  • 5 for Division B
  • 2 for Division E – Areas E41 and E42
  • Will you be one of them?

Area Directors must be appointed before August 31st to receive credit for their role.

We had a great Summer TLI with wonderful food, fun, and learning experienced by all!

The Importance of Public Relations

The Importance of Public Relations

Hello, District 6 Toastmasters! Welcome to a brand new Toastmasters year!

I am honored to be your 2023 – 2024 Public Relations Manager! I have an excellent team lined up to help spread the word about District 6 clubs and its talented members. Good PR is vital to many Toastmasters activities. You can’t run a business or expect an event to draw a large crowd without appropriate media attention. Likewise, Toastmasters clubs can’t remain strong without attracting new members while retaining current members.

The main goal of public relations is to generate positive awareness of the Toastmasters brand to attract and retain members. It requires keeping the public fully informed of club or District activities through effective communication and media relations. Overall, good PR will build membership, gain public recognition, and enhance perception.

An effective public relations and publicity program requires the support and involvement of every Toastmaster. Well-planned, well-organized, and well-conducted meetings, programs, and events provide a solid foundation for good PR.

As a Toastmaster, you are the best cheerleader for your club to shout from the rooftops about all of the amazing things that you and your club are doing throughout the Toastmasters year. Advertise your meetings on your club’s Facebook page, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, Meet Up and Eventbrite. Feature your club’s special events such as Speechcraft and Open Houses on the District 6 Facebook page and Toastmasters International Facebook pages.

As your Public Relations Manager, I am here to help you with tips, tricks, and strategies to get the word out. In addition to providing several resources for you over the course of the year, I will be holding VPPR seminars starting in August and sending VPPR emails. I am also available to answer questions or give training to help you utilize the tools that Toastmasters International has designed just for you. Whether your question is big or small, please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss all things Public Relations.

Finally, I am looking for someone to manage the District 6 Podcasts. If you are working towards your DTM, this may be a perfect opportunity for a project. Please contact me for more details if you are interested.

This is an exciting time to be a Toastmaster! I look forward to serving you throughout this year!

A New Toastmaster Year

A New Toastmaster Year

As the New Toastmaster Year is in full swing, I am busy trying to understand my new role as Program Quality Director, while at the same time helping the new Club Growth Director with her role.

I am planning and setting District goals that can be accomplished from my role as well as working with the rest of the Trio on setting District goals and budget. I am also working on my own goals for growth through my participation in Toastmasters. What goals do I personally want to accomplish? What skills do I want to improve?

What it all boils down to is how can I improve myself and how can I help my fellow Toastmasters improve. I hope that each of you who reads this newsletter is thinking about these two questions in your own Toastmaster journey. I believe that this twofold approach of self-improvement and serving others through participation in Toastmaster club meetings and fulfilling leadership roles is what makes Toastmasters so effective.

In my role as Program Quality Director, I hope to give our members and leaders the tools they need to succeed.

Club Officer Training for this round is coming to an end. We are continuing to build on the success we had in improving Club officer training by having a dedicated training team perform all training. This raises the bar on quality and consistency as we have trainers who are familiar with the material and practiced in its delivery to provide the training.

In the training, we cover the basics of each of the officer roles as well as cover topics in effective teamwork and managing your club that we think are well worth attending.

There are 3 trainings left this August. If you cannot find one that works for you, you can also attend a three-hour training session provided by another District. I thank all of you who are making the investment in yourselves and your clubs by attending these trainings.

As an additional incentive, the District will provide Officer Pins for all officers in a club that has all 7 officers trained at both rounds of officer training.

The training we have on our schedule is:

Wednesday, August 23rd, 6 – 9 pm

Thursday, August 24th, 6- 9 pm and

Thursday, August 31st, 6 – 9 pm

Please go to the district Calendar (d6tm.org/calendar) and register for the date that works for you.

I have some ongoing concerns about our club members that are not using Pathways. This is the educational program that Toastmasters offers us and while it is not perfect, it is effective. If your club or some members of your club are still reluctant about Pathways we would like to help. The district has a Pathways team that is willing to help your club and its members discover how they can use Pathways. Please contact me and we can get you some help!

As you work with your club members, help them focus on their goals and use Pathways to achieve them. You will both be rewarded with the growth that seek in Toastmasters. Your efforts will also be reflected in your club success plan as your members achieve their goals and your club attracts new members that want to improve their communication and leadership goals.

I look forward to a great year and hope you all get the success that you work for!

New Year, New Clubs, New Coaches!

New Year, New Clubs, New Coaches!

It is a new Toastmaster year, and I am thrilled to be the District 6 Club Growth Director. I am excited for the year ahead. We have untapped opportunities to investigate and share with you. In this newsletter, we will be publishing regular updates and Toastmaster announcements, and news for club growth to keep you informed of opportunities.

We are ready to start new clubs! We are looking forward to hearing your ideas and suggestions for new clubs. If you have a group, community, union, school, or company that would like to start a club please let me know. As your Club Growth Director, I am going to help you with the steps to make that new club idea a reality. We also plan to offer incentives to folks who submit leads that launch new clubs. We are excited to hear your ideas! District leadership is reviewing all incentive proposals for approval. Check our future newsletters for more details and specifics about our 2024 incentive initiatives. If you want to help start new clubs, you can apply to be a sponsor; if you want to help a new club succeed apply to be a club mentor. Our application form is on our website Current Openings – District 6 Toastmasters (d6tm.org). If you have leads for new clubs or folks looking to launch a club, I am here to talk to you about your new club idea and help make it a reality.

We are also looking to strengthen our existing District 6 clubs. Clubs with fewer than 13 members can get a coach to help them thrive and grow. We can use your help as a club coach. This is an excellent skill-building and networking opportunity. You can sign up to be a coach and we will align you to a good match. Let us know if you have any preference to coach a community or corporate club. Let us know if you want to coach a club in a specific area of District 6, or if you prefer to coach an online club. We will find a good match for you to coach. Help these clubs succeed by becoming their coach. Please apply to be a coach Here

How Toastmasters Can Earn College Credits Toward a Degree

How Toastmasters Can Earn College Credit Toward a Degree

Would you ever think being involved in Toastmasters could earn college credits toward a Bachelor’s Degree? While in college during the pandemic I thought I would ask this question to Metropolitan State University.

My name is Paula O’Brien. I am a member and President of both Community Spirit Toastmasters and Apple Valley Toastmasters in Minnesota for District 6. I joined Toastmasters 8 years ago to try to build self-confidence. Within 2 meetings in each club, I could feel a foundation of confidence growing within myself as a result of writing speeches, speaking, and signing on to leadership roles. I had always wanted to finish my college degree but work and family filled my life for many years. With the confidence I was gaining through Toastmasters, I signed up at Metropolitan State University.

Metro State offers Prior Life Experience toward earning college credits. Could being in Toastmasters count as a Prior Life Experience? It turns out, yes…I was able to receive 3 credits for writing, 3 credits for public speaking and communication, and 3 credits for leadership roles for Toastmasters and my Cosmetology business for a business class.

To receive credit, I had to write papers, do presentations, and have a Toastmaster signature – proof of my work within Toastmasters. I am personally thankful to Linda Dorn, DTM in District 6, for her guidance for the credit received. I kept in touch with Linda on my progress so she could confirm and sign off on my work to earn credit. Each class was a full semester as a regular class but I had already done most of the required work within my Toastmasters clubs, therefore the work was much easier during those semesters.

State Colleges and Universities in Minnesota charge $20 per credit or free if you audit classes for all persons age 62 and older. That is a steal…

After I earned these credits Metropolitan State University decided to place “Toastmasters” on their list as another way of earning Prior Life Experience credits toward a college degree.

I was able to earn a Bachelor of Arts/Summa Cum Laude in “Communication and Leadership” in 2020. I know that if I had never joined Toastmasters I would not have gained the confidence that I continue to gain today as well as ending up finishing a college degree that I intended to finish years ago. Many members have upleveled in their careers through being involved in Toastmasters.

Toastmasters is a special gem in many ways for many people. I am forever thankful for Toastmasters.

Passing the Torch!

Passing the Torch!

Fellow Toastmasters, it’s that time of year! As year-end is fast approaching on June 30 there is so much to do! Finish strong by electing new club officers, turning in any educational awards you have completed, and adding new members with a personal invite, holding an open house or Speechcraft. As we elect new club officers for the next year, current club officers pass the torch and set them up for success by mentoring them in their new roles and making sure they know that they need to attend club officer training 2 times a year (Round 1 has already started). If you have completed any Pathway levels that you have not turned in for credit, please make sure you do this before June 30. It is always great to get new members in your club! It’s not too late to do that by personal invitations to friends, co-workers or
family—by having an open house before June 30, or by having a Speechcraft. Pass the magic of Toastmasters to others that you know could benefit.

Important Dates and information:

The new club officer lists need to be submitted to Club Central before June 30. PLEASE do this or you will not be able to get into Club Central on July 1.

Check your Distinguished Club Plan. Have the members of your club been completing Pathways levels? Do you need just one more education award or one more new member to be a Distinguished or better club? Your club deserves to be recognized by Toastmasters International! Make that happen by having 5 or more goals achieved on the Distinguished Club Plan and meeting the membership requirement (20 members or a net growth of plus 3 members from June 1, 2022).

Be ready to start the year off strong by reviewing/setting your Toastmaster’s goals now. It’s not too late to fill out that application to be an Area Director in District 6 next year. You grow the most by challenging yourself! The Area Director role is the best role in the district! Step out of your club and meet awesome Toastmasters in the clubs you will be serving.

The future of District 6 is in good hands! I will be passing the torch on July 1 to District Director Elect DTM Colleen Marie Kelly and the rest of the Trio: Program Quality Director Elect DTM David Schaal and Club Growth Director Elect Alli Tripp. It has been a great year of membership growth and it will be even greater next year. Thank you for letting me serve the members of District 6! It has been an honor and a pleasure.

I won’t be far! As Immediate Past District Director starting July 1, I will still be supporting the members of District 6 in different ways.

With Gratitude,

Deb

The BEST is Yet Ahead!

The BEST is Yet Ahead!

Hello District 6,

Thank you for your dedication and commitment to your Toastmasters Journey! It is truly inspiring!

It is almost hard to believe that this Toastmasters Year is almost over, and yet, I truly believe that there is so much more we can do with the time remaining!

I encourage you to complete the education goals you set for yourself for this year, bring in those new members, and help your club finish the year strong! You will be amazed at what your intentional efforts can do!

If the truth be told, we actually have a fighting chance to finish the year as a Distinguished District which is something we have not been in many years. To some that may sound like an empty status symbol, and yet, to me, it represents the resilience, dedication, and amazing potential of our members. We have and are continuing to overcome the tremendous challenges of the pandemic. In the process, we are rising stronger than we have ever been. I truly believe our greatest days as a district are yet ahead!

As I reflect on this past year, there are many things I could highlight. Here are just a few:

This past year, we upleveled the club officer training materials and introduced a dedicated training team which is something District 6 has never done before. The results were amazing as this team exemplified a heart for giving the members their personal best as we incorporated real-time feedback and conducted monthly retrospectives which resulted in an overall increase in the quality of training delivered and some of the highest training numbers the district has seen in years not to mention extremely positive feedback from trainers and attendees alike! This team has laid the groundwork for an even better training experience in the coming year!! I cannot fully express my gratitude enough for this amazing team!!

Our in-person TLIs felt like family reunions as people were excited to reconnect with one another not to mention the value-added training that was provided!!

Our Spring Conference led by our Amazing District 6 Administration Manager and Spring Conference Chair, Nancy Hobbs, DTM, was incredible as we had a great lineup of education presenters including: Past International President Lark Doley, DTM, Region 4 International Director Kim Myers, DTM, Past District 6 Directors Ravi Rai, DTM and Diane Windingland, DTM, and the awesome mother and son duo Lori Ziebarth and Jack Jacobson.

We also held the first ever Toastmasters Got Talent Event where we saw some incredible talent on display!

We conducted hybrid District Speech Contests with our very own Past Region Advisor Mary Swanson, DTM serving as our District Chief Judge. Jose Luciano won first place in the Humorous Speech Contest as he had us laughing with “Honesty is the Best Policy…Right?” speech. Michael Tsia won first place in the International Speech Contest as he inspired us with his speech “It has to be YOU!”

Our Silent Auction, led by Georgette Benidt & Tara Bolanda, was one of the best yet as they raised $2957. Their out-of-the-box thinking and tenacity delivered incredible results!! Their efforts were instrumental in generating positive revenue for the district. It was a great problem for our amazing District Finance Manager, Chuck Brunnette, DTM, to learn how to enter positive revenue numbers for an event rather than having to supply a narrative to District Finance at World Headquarters as to why we were not successful in holding a budget neutral event. I believe we will only continue with this positive momentum.

I want to thank our current Division, Area Directors, and the District Operations Team (Trio, PRM, Admin Manager, Finance Manager, and Logistics Manager) for all that they have done this year to support our clubs! Our members are worth our time and our investment! I truly believe that this year’s team has been instrumental in setting the stage for a great 2023-24 Toastmasters Year!

My biggest thank you goes to our Amazing District 6 Director, Deb Luu, DTM. I cannot even begin to adequately express how grateful I am for her, and all that she has done these past two years as District Director. She has modeled love and commitment to the members of District 6 like few I have seen. On July 1st when she becomes the Immediate Past District Director, she will be leaving some very big shoes to fill. I am grateful that I have her number on speed dial, and I know where she lives as she has truly been a trusted friend, confidant, mentor, and a stellar example of what it looks like when a leader puts the members first. The good news for everyone is that she will still be actively involved in clubs and supporting the members of District 6. She will also serve as the District Leadership Committee Chair in the 2023-24 Toastmasters year and will help identify future leaders for the district . . . Who knows, her dangerously delicious chocolate chunk cookies may magically appear at district events.

As the incoming team is partnering with the current team to learn how they can best support our members, I truly believe we will have an even stronger year than we did this year!

With that in mind, we still need Area Directors for Division B (B11, B12, B13, B14, and B15), 2 for Division C (C21 & C23), 2 for Division E (E41& E42) and 2 for Division F (F52-54). If you are interested in serving the clubs in these Areas in a meaningful way, please review this job description and submit your application. I look forward to speaking with you soon about this amazing opportunity!

If you have an interest in using your talents and abilities to serve the members of District 6, please reach out to me and we will find a place for you to shine as you help take District 6 to the next level.

TOGETHER – The BEST is Yet Ahead!

Sincerely,

Colleen Marie

Complete the Year!

Complete the Year

The end of the Toastmasters Year is coming, and we should all end the year strong! In a time of transition, where you may be stepping down from an officer role and the club DCP plan will reset, it might feel like you might not want to put your best effort in, someone new will pick up the slack in a couple of weeks. We want to avoid that feeling. What serves us and our fellow Toastmasters is for us to keep being the best speaker, mentor, friend, and leader that we can be all the way until the final day of June. That is what I think of when I hear end the year strong.

I thoroughly endorse the message, but I think the phrase “end the year strong” makes Toastmasters sound like we are running a race. I would like to think of finishing the year complete. What does it mean finishing complete? When something is complete, it is done, finished, whole.

Look forward to the last weeks (as of this writing) of the Toastmasters year. What is there left to do? What can you do? One or two more members for the club? It can be done. An extra speech to complete a level, I bet at least one member of your club is in that position. Maybe that is all your club needs to be Distinguished. Even if it’s not, your club is continuing to move forward, gaining members, completing awards, and growing in their speaking and leadership skills. If your club is already at President’s Distinguished, you can keep going, adding members, earning education awards, and moving forward. When you get to the end of the year, you will know you did your best and can feel satisfied with your efforts, you can be complete.

Look back at your goals for the year. Which ones did you finish? Which ones did you make good progress on? Which ones did you not even start? Be ok with all of it. You contributed to the education of yourself and your fellow Toastmasters. Feel good about that, feel complete.

On June 30th, you can complete this Toastmasters year and look forward to creating the next year with a blank slate!

In Service,

Dave Schaal

Toastmasters Chronicles: An Adventure as an Area Director

Toastmasters Chronicles: An Adventure as an Area Director

Greetings, fellow Toastmasters, enthusiasts and aficionados! I would like to share the amusing journey through my experience as an Area Director. Toastmasters is not just about public speaking; it’s a place where laughter and personal growth go hand in hand. So, settle comfortably, allow yourself to unwind, and prepare to immerse yourself in a delightful voyage filled with mirth and profound self-discovery.

Chapter 1: The Mystery of the Missing Timer

Ah, the joy of running a Toastmasters meeting! As the Area Director, part of my responsibility was to ensure conduct of the Area Contest. Unexpectedly, I encountered a minor hiccup: the Timer went missing! Since it was an online meeting, when contestants were dependent on the timer to show the timer cards, I frantically searched high and low, to find those three colors nearby. Indeed! It served as a valuable reminder to always remain vigilant and attuned to the mischievous nature of our internet connection.

Chapter 2: Table Topics with a Twist

Table Topics, the impromptu speaking segment of a Toastmasters meeting, is always a source of amusement. But during my tenure as Area Director, I decided to add a unique twist. I introduced a secret theme: “Describe your favorite superhero…as a kitchen appliance.” The bewildered expressions and the ensuing creative responses were simply priceless! We had heroes like “Captain Can Opener” to “The Mighty Microwave.” Members proved that our beloved superheroes could find a home in our culinary realms.

Chapter 3: The Quirky Icebreaker Challenge

At Toastmasters, we strive to encourage members to conquer their fears and embrace personal growth. So, I concocted an audacious challenge for our clubs: “The Quirky Icebreaker Challenge.” Each member had to deliver their Icebreaker speech with a peculiar prop or costume. Picture a speaker donning a traffic cone hat or passionately presenting while juggling oranges. The room erupted in laughter, breaking the ice and dissolving nervousness in the most delightful way.

Chapter 4: The Unforgettable Evaluation Blunder

One fine day, a guest unknowingly mistook a regular meeting for an evaluation contest. When the evaluation section arrived, the guest confidently stood up and started critiquing every aspect of the meeting. Amidst initial confusion, we decided to roll with it, transforming the unexpected feedback into an evaluation-turned-comedy routine. It served as a valuable lesson, teaching us the art of embracing unforeseen circumstances with poise and finding humor in the most unanticipated situations.

Epilogue:

My journey as an Area Director in Toastmasters was a delightful adventure brimming with laughter, personal growth, and unexpected escapades. From the elusive timer to the whimsical icebreaker challenge, every experience was a testament to the vibrant spirit of Toastmasters.

So, dear readers, whether you find yourself in a leadership position in Toastmasters or any other organization, remember to embrace the unexpected, infuse humor into your endeavors, and create opportunities for laughter. It is in these moments that connections are forged, individuals grow, and lifelong memories are made.
