Ready for a new Beginning?

Ready for a new Beginning?

For many, January is a time of reflection. I invite you to take time to see how far you have gone in your Toastmaster’s journey and what you will achieve next! Will you complete a path? Are you ready to step into leadership in your club or the District?

Club Officer Training is in Full Swing!

Club officers have an opportunity to attend training for the second half of the Toastmaster Year. Our training is engaging and gives each attendee the chance to contribute to break-out sessions! Club Officer Training enables the officers to effectively serve their club and members!

See the District Calendar for Training Dates https://d6tm.org/calendar/

The District has many incentives for clubs that reach their Membership and DCP goals. We had one incentive for clubs that have achieved 5 DCP points by December 31st.

Congratulations to the following clubs that have achieved this incentive!

  • HealthToasters Club
  • Tech Masters-Twin Cities
  • SUPER Communicators
  • Up and Optum Toastmasters
  • OptUMs and Ahs
  • Tri-County Toastmasters
  • Word Masters
  • Pathways new LMS

Toastmasters will be launching a new Learning Management System in the first half of this calendar year.

Keep updated by checking this link:

https://www.toastmasters.org/education/pathways/pathways-updates

It is important that levels earned in pathways are also added to Club Central. As we move to the new learning system, the level will be approved once only, so it is important that the approvals are done in both pathways and Club Central so that they won’t get lost when we move to the new system.

Club Success is a Team effort!

It takes all the members of the club to achieve success in the Distinguished Club Program.

Club officers will go to training, all members can help with club membership and all members should be working in Pathways and contributing to the Educational portion of the DCP. If a member is working two or more paths at the same time, it is important to know that a club can only get credit for 1 of each level submitted by the same member in the same year. For example, Toastmaster Jane is working on both the Presentation Mastery path and the Engaging Humor path. She completes level 1 and level 2 in Presentation Mastery and submits them to her club.  She then goes to Engaging Humor and completes level 1. When she submits it and a club officer approves it, she will get credit for the second level 1, but the club will not get credit in the DCP for the second Level 1.

Ways to be sure your club gets credit for all levels you submit:

Work one path at a time. This will make it less likely that you submit two award levels in the same year.

Join a second club! If you want to work through Pathways more quickly, join a second club! This way each club can get credit for one of the two levels you have completed.

Use Club Newsletters

Use a Club Newsletters to Inform and Impress

We live in an era of emails and electronic newsletters. Newsletters are everywhere, published in various forms, by businesses of all kinds. More so now than ever before. Looks like even some Toastmasters clubs have joined the fray and are putting out newsletters of their own.

According to Toastmasters International, “Good newsletters can inspire and motivate members, create energy between meetings, and keep your club connected.”

Are you wondering if a club newsletter is right for YOUR club?

I have some answers for you!

A club newsletter, at its core, is news about the club. As a Toastmasters club, your club meets periodically, your members make educational progress and reach milestones, you will acquire new members, and some of your members may even score notable achievements outside the club. There are all kinds of news, on a regular basis, about your club. The question arises: How do you leverage all this vivacity of your club in maintaining continual engagement from your members and guests alike? You know that is what it takes for a club to thrive.

A club newsletter is a really potent tool that you can wield in recognizing members and attracting new members.

You can share the club newsletter with your club members and guests at a minimum. You can also post your club newsletter on your club website. Members can share the club newsletter electronically with friends and coworkers or even leave the newsletter in common workplace locations such as breakrooms and cafeterias.

A club newsletter does not have to be overly fancy. Toastmasters International has templates to help you put together a newsletter. The template can be found at: https://www.toastmasters.org/resources/newsletter-template.

If you have any questions about a club newsletter or promoting your club, please reach out to me.

Rest Reflect Refocus

REST – REFLECT – REFOCUS

Dear District 6 Members,

It is almost hard to believe that we are nearing the end of 2023. Without a doubt, the year has flown by. The Holidays seem to only affirm that realization, and yet, I hope that as the year winds down you will take time to rest, reflect, and refocus.

Resting – physically, mentally, and emotionally – has tremendous benefits.

Physical Rest allows our bodies time to recover, prevents injuries, reduces pain levels, boosts immune system, lowers blood pressure which promotes a healthier heart, and improves overall performance.

Mental and Emotional Rest increases creativity, mental clarity, alertness, and energy levels, as well as improves the quality of sleep, improves the ability to regulate emotions – reduces anxiety and improves moods, memory, and productivity.

Reflection

As a leader, while it is important to take intentional and meaningful actions to accomplish goals and objectives, it is equally important to take time to pause and reflect. Reflecting is taking the time to thoughtfully consider where we have been, what we have accomplished, and what we hope to accomplish in the future. It is asking ourselves if we are truly happy with the results we achieved, the manner in which we achieved those results, as well as the person we are becoming or do we need to adjust what we are doing. Honest reflection takes courage because it will highlight opportunities for improvement. While some adjustments are minor, others may be more significant, and yet, if we are willing to adjust, our efforts will yield great dividends. It will highlight what is really important to us, how we can achieve even better results, as well as ways we can step into our personal potential in a greater way. When we commit ourselves to becoming the best version of ourselves, it will be a win in every arena and relationship in our lives.

Refocus

After you have taken the time to reflect, choose to refocus where needed. Focus on what is really important to you and the path necessary to accomplish the goals you are seeking to achieve.

Distraction will zap our energy quicker than you could imagine.

The flip side of that is also true. Where you have clarity and focus, you will find the energy and momentum building within you to see your goals achieved. You will have a renewed excitement to take the steps necessary to achieve the goals that are before you.

As you think about 2024, please do not go into it passively. Take some time to identify what you want to accomplish in the coming year. Think about the kind of person you want to become, and then, make a clear actionable plan to achieve those goals and become an even better version of yourself.

I believe that each one of you has tremendous potential within you. My heart is that 2024 will be a year that you step onto the path of your potential in a greater way. A year where you are intentional about taking the steps necessary to accomplish your goals or at least moving towards them in a greater measure.

I truly believe that the BEST IS YET AHEAD!

Supporting Your Success

Supporting Your Success

My fellow Toastmasters, some of you are in one club, while some of you, like me, are in multiple clubs. Some of you are in a community club (all my clubs are community clubs), while some are in a corporate club, and some are in both! Whichever of those descriptions fits you, we all seek the right formula for our success and the success of our clubs. In the efforts of one of my clubs to make our club growth activities more successful, we recently changed the club’s name. The previous name, System Masters, came from the club’s founding in the mid-1980s as a corporate club. As the club has been a community club since long before any of the current members joined, we were not sure how that name fit our image. We decided on a new name (and it’s official on toastmasters.org!): SUCCESS MASTERS. We invite fellow Toastmasters and guests to collaborate with us in supporting each other’s success.

In my own Toastmasters journey, I have experienced so many of our service-oriented members continually paying forward and giving back to support each other’s success. With gratitude, I wish to embody a similar spirit of service by supporting the specific steps of your success in ways that the following:

  • Recommending clubs, you may visit and consider joining as a dual member
  • Recommending clubs to guests who may no longer be able to engage your club due to their schedule changes
  • Answering your questions about Pathways, from Base Camp button-clicking to matching the projects with your passions
  • Connecting you with speech contest organizers about contest roles (Contest participation, whether as a contestant or as a helper, is a valuable addition to the growth of your communication and leadership skills as well as to the visibility of your club!)
  • Helping your understanding of the jargon and geography of the broader Toastmasters organization

In summary, I would be pleased to support your success.

With best wishes,

Paul Lubinski, DTM

Vice President Education for: Success Masters, Gopher Toastmasters, Humor Mill Toastmasters, and Pathways to Success Toastmasters

The Importance of Consistency in Social Media Marketing

The Importance of Consistency in Social Media Marketing

Consistency is key in social media marketing. For your audience to recognize your brand, you must be consistent. Being consistent in your brand allows you to grow in audience engagement and reach. From the tone of voice used in messages to the aesthetics of your profiles, you need to be recognizable to gain traction among your intended audience.

There are four areas in which, to ensure, you are being consistent: voice, content, posting, and aesthetics.

First, understand who your club is speaking to when posting on social media. You know who you are, what you do, and why it matters to people.

Second, show what you know and share what your audience will find relevant to their lives. The goal is to be relevant and authentic.

Third, find a balance when posting content. Make sure that you aren’t posting too much of a certain type of content and not enough of another.

Finally, keep your posts to an appropriate length and your profile needs to have visual appeal. People are visual creatures and are naturally attracted to aesthetically appealing visuals.

Try these four concepts in your marketing for the next few months and see if it helps draw people to your club.

Serving Our Members

Serving Our Members

How do we best serve our members? I think there are four things that we can focus on that will result in serving our club members.

1.      Quality meetings

Does our club environment inspire everyone to do their best? Do our members have the tools they need to fulfil their roles in the meeting? Does every member get the most out of each and every meeting?

Use the Moments of Truth to see how well your club is doing. Complete the moments of truth at a club officer meeting, or with the entire club. Then look at the responses and create actionable goals for improving your club environment. Make using the Moments of Truth a yearly habit for your club. You will see the difference it will make each year!

2.      Members meet their personal and professional goals through the Toastmasters Pathways Program

Are members enrolled in Pathways and are they Engaged? Do they understand how to best use the program to meet their educational goals?

3.      Club officers are trained

When officers are trained, they have the knowledge to best run their clubs and help their members. Second round of officer training starts in November. Check the District Calendar for details.

4.      New Members are coached

When your club gets a new member, are they immediately assigned a coach? A coach will help the member get signed into the TI website, and your club website and get the member familiar with how the club assigns roles. A coach can also help the new member with their first speech or two.

The District is here to help you succeed. We offer training and coaching in Pathways and can direct you to other resources to help you best serve your members. Many of these are discussed in club officer training, so be sure to attend!

Leaning In: The Cost, Learnings, and Benefits of Leadership

Leaning In: The Cost, Learnings, and Benefits of Leadership

It has often been said that you will get out of life what you put into it. The truth of that statement cannot be overstated and can be applied to every arena of our lives including Toastmasters.

In our Toastmasters Journey, there are an abundance of learning opportunities, and if we will lean into them, we will find a plethora of benefits that will benefit us in every arena of our lives. The key is we must choose to lean into them to experience the full benefits they have to offer.

While it is true that Toastmasters is a volunteer organization, if to the best one’s ability, one will lean into the leadership opportunities that Toastmaster offers as if they were paid opportunities, they will find tremendous learnings that can be gleaned that will make them more effective in their paid opportunities. If we choose not to lean it to them or only lean into those opportunities half-heartedly, while there are some intrinsic benefits we will gain, we will miss some of the most valuable benefits that could be applied to other arenas of our lives including paid employment opportunities.

These learnings will set us apart from other candidates in some of the best ways possible, and we will experientially see that “Toastmasters IS Where Leaders are Made.”

For us to truly lean into the leadership opportunities that Toastmasters offers, we must understand the cost, the learnings, and benefits of serving in leadership.

1.     The Cost of Serving in Leadership

§  Time

Serving in leadership will always require a time commitment, and the higher one aspires to go will require a higher level of commitment. It is important to understand the time commitments that come with a leadership role that you are seeking to serve in. If the time commitment is more than you anticipated, then perhaps you should consider another role or serve at another time when you have the bandwidth to serve in the role in a manner that role deserves.

WorkLife Balance is important, and yet, it should never be used as an excuse to not fulfill the responsibilities of your role. It is important to know how to prioritize your responsibilities so that you are best able to fulfill the responsibilities of your role. If prioritization of role responsibilities is unclear, be sure to ask your leader to define the prioritization for you.

§  Putting your opinion aside for the greater good.

Understand that while your opinion is important when you are a leader, you need to always act and make decisions that are in the best interest of the people you are serving. Sometimes that will mean laying aside your personal preferences in a given matter and making decisions that will add greater value to those you are serving.

§  Good Leaders are Good Followers

There is an ancient proverb that says, “He who is faithful over little will be made ruler over much.” As we demonstrate that we can be depended upon to deliver quality results in an integrous manner for the tasks we are asked to complete in the timeframe we are asked to complete them in, we will often be given greater responsibilities. We will be seen as trustworthy and dependable. The opposite is true as well. If we do not deliver quality results, complete tasks in the timeframe we were asked to complete them, or not do things in an integrous manner, we run the risk of having responsibilities removed from us. That is why it is always in our best interest and those that we are serving to lean in and give our personal best in all things.

Being a good follower will enable us to have empathy and compassion for those that we lead & serve.

It will demonstrate that we won’t ask those who report to us to do anything we wouldn’t do ourselves. This type of servant leadership will command not demand respect. Those who do not respect authority will often demand respect rather than look for ways to earn it by modeling the behavior they wish to see. By modeling the behavior, we wish to see, regardless if we are a leader or a follower, will demonstrate the Toastmasters Core Values of Integrity, Respect, Service, and Excellence. Those traits will be the positive differentiator in all that we say and do.

2.     The Learnings of Serving in Leadership

§  Leadership is a learning journey. All of us – even the most world renown leaders (whoever you believe that is) – have room to grow. We never arrive. We simply can improve if we will lean in and be intentional about learning and growing. If we are always endeavoring to be the best version of ourselves, it will be amazing what and who we can become as leaders. We will add greater and greater value to the world that we touch. It is then that we will be positive difference makers in Toastmasters, in our day job, and in arena of our lives.

§  Toastmasters provides an abundance of leadership opportunities from Committee Members, Club Officers, Area Directors, Division Directors, District Leaders, Region Advisors, International Directors, Board Members, and even the International President. Each leadership opportunity has a list of skills that you can learn and develop through serving in the given role. You simply need to lean in and learn. If you do, you will be like scores of people across the globe who have had doors of opportunity and even dream jobs open up to them because of the skills they learned and developed in Toastmasters.

§  Staying Humble is Key to Learning. It says that we don’t know it all. The reality is none of us know everything about everything. It is good to know our strengths and areas of expertise. At the same time, we need to recognize that other people have strengths and abilities that we don’t have. Together, we are stronger. Leaning into this truth helps us to be open to other perspectives that may catch something we missed which is a key skill in any team environment. When our hearts and minds know that we don’t know it all and we maintain a humble posture towards others, we increase our capacity to learn exponentially.

3.      The Benefits of Serving in Leadership

§  Competence Breeds Confidence

All of us can be nervous about stepping out of our comfort zone to try new things such as agreeing to serve in a leadership role. Yet, if we are willing to say yes and lean into leadership opportunities, we will find ourselves learning and growing in ways that might surprise us. In the process, we develop skills and abilities which causes our confidence to bloom and grow.

§  Discovering Our Hidden Potential

Each one of us has talents and abilities within us that are often far greater than we could imagine. We typically are aware of some of the talents and abilities, and yet, it is often when we step out into new areas that we discover hidden talents and abilities that we did not even know that we had. As competence and confidence grow, we find ourselves with a greater sense of fulfillment knowing perhaps in a greater way that we matter and that our lives can and do make a meaningful difference in the world that we touch.

§  Servant Leadership is about Adding Value.

There is nothing more rewarding than knowing that you were able to help an individual, team, or organization fulfill their goals and step onto the path of their potential. As you help others achieve their goals, you will be amazed at how you end up realizing your own goals and dreams. Serving in leadership truly is a Win-Win.

As you consider leadership opportunities in Toastmasters whether at the Club, Area, or District level, I hope you will consider the cost, learnings, and benefits of leadership and LEAN IN. If you do, you will be amazed at how much you will learn, and grow, as you make a meaningful difference in the lives of your fellow Toastmasters and help take District 6 to the next level!

Remember that TOGETHER – The BEST is Yet Ahead!

Sincerely,

Colleen Marie
